UNESCO has declared that tragic day, 21 February, as International Mother Language Day for the honour of BENGALI language movement in 1952. It is indeed a historic achievement for our country and nation that 21st February, our Mahan Shaheed Dibash has now been proclaimed as the International Mother Language Day.
Our Language Movement , in which Salam, Barkat and others laid down their lives and so many others had to go to jail and undergo immense sufferings for the cause of the mother tongue, is unique event in the contemporary history. The whole country and nation will always remember their contributions. In our national life 21st February will always be remembered as the starting point of our war of self-determination and independence.

Bangla is the official language of Bangladesh. It is also spoken in West Bengal. Bangalees protected Bangla from the clutches of Pakistani oppressors in 1952 by preventing Urdu from being the state language of East Pakistan where a vast majority of people spoke in Bangla. Bangalees had to sacrifice lives for their mother tongue on 21st February, 1952. 21st February being declared
International Mother Language Day by UNESCO, Bangla reached the peak of maturity.

The sacrifices of Rafiq, Salam, Jabbar, Barkat and other martyrs as well as of those tortured and repressed by the then authoritarian government of Pakistan for championing the cause of their mother tongue have received now a glorious and new recognition by the November 1999 resolution of the UNESCO.

The country, Bangladesh, is named after its national language Bangla. And no other country sacrificed blood to legislate their language as the national language but Bangladesh, what was then East Pakistan in 1952. It is the official language of the state of West Bengal and the co-official language of the state of Tripura and union territory of Andaman and
Nicobar Islands of INDIA. Bengali speakers make the majority in Neil Islands and Havelock Island. It was made an official language of Sierra Leone in order to honor the Bangladeshi peacekeeping force from the United Nations stationed there. It is also the co-official
language of Assam, which has three predominantly Sylheti-speaking districts of southern Assam: Silchar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The national anthems of both India and Bangladesh were written in BENGALI noble lauriete poet RABINDRANATH TAGORE.
